Being a customization lover, I always love to tweak Windows to get better possibilities alive. In Windows 7, I used our freeware Start Button ToolTip Text Changer to change the Start button tooltip. In Windows 8, there are a lot of things you can just customization to make it more beautiful. For example, in the Start Screen of Windows 8, on the top left corner, you’ll see “Start” text. To some user, this may be looking justified, while some of you may want to remove/modify it, since the text is constant and doesn’t link anywhere like the Start Button in Windows 7 does.
So how can we erase it? Or modify it to display some another text than “Start“? Well, we just have a customization method to share with you all. Here it is! Do remember to create a system restore point first!
Customize Start text of Start Screen using Resource Hacker
1. Firstly, go to twinui.dll.mui file located at C:\Windows\System32\en_US\twinui.dll.mui. Copy it to the desktop, rename the file to twinui.dll and open it into Resource Hacker.
2. In the left pane, expand the String Table -> Folder 235 -> 1033. Now your Resource Hacker window should resemble following window:
3. In the right pane, you’ll see the line number 3751 having the data as Start as highlighted in the above image. This text is purely displayed as the title of Start Screen as shown in the first image. So in order to display nothing, just erase the text or if you want to display your own text, put it there. Click Compile Script then.
Perform the same and change the text at String Table -> 640 -> 1033. Now close the Resource Hacker and restore the original file name to twinui.dll.mui.
4. Now take the ownership of original file i.e. twinui.dll.mui located at C:\Windows\System32\en_US\twinui.dll.mui. Replace the edited file from Desktop with the original one.
5. Finally, press Windows Key + R, type mcbuilder. Click OK.
That’s it! You should now reboot the machine to get the results:
Hope you enjoyed the tip and find it useful!
NOTE: The post has been updated, thanks to inputs from Armani S. Valtier aka Alexander Rhett Crammer in the comments below.
Great. Thanks for the tips..
Work only under Win 8. Under Windows 8.1 you must edit the entrie “640” in the twinui.dll.mui.
^^ Not sure about Windows 8.1, will check out :)
didn’t work on my windows 8 pro 32 bit. why?
did not work here: win8 pro 32bits PT-BR
No good here, win8 pro 32bits
It didn’t work for me either. Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, it-IT.
^^ Seems like you guys aren’t following exact procedure. It worked on my Windows 8 Pro; 32-bit & Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview; 64-bit. Please retry the exact procedure and write us back. Also let us know, what issue you face after following above method?
How do i change “font color”? can i do that? please reply, thank you. :)
I’ve followed every step very carefully. I have the twinui.dll.mui file saved in the en-US folder with the “Start” strings from 235 and 640 changed to what I wanted my Start text to be. I am using en-US as my primary language. I have run mcbuilder then rebooted over and over again. I open the twinui.dll.mui file from the en-US folder with Resource Hacker and I see that my changes to the strings are still there. WHY ISN’T IT WORKING!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!??!?!?!
GUYS I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT
1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
2. Change the directory to C:WindowsSystem32en-US by typing “cd C:WindowsSystem32en-US” (now, this is the part where you’d change ‘en-US’ to fit your current language and country. For instance, France would be fr-FR and Italy would be it-IT)
3. Let’s copy the .mui file we’ll be using to the desktop by typing to Command Prompt, “copy twinui.dll.mui C:Users(your user directory here)Desktop”
4. Open Resource Hacker with administrative privileges by right clicking ResHacker.exe and choosing “Run as administrator”
5. Open the twinui.dll.mui file on your Desktop from Resource Hacker. (It won’t show in the Resource Hacker open window by default, so type “twinui.dll.mui” in the box then select it!
6. Navigate through String Table > 235 > 1033 to change the “Start” text. Change the text between the quotation marks beside number 3751 to the text you want on the Start screen in place of “Start” then click the “Compile Script” button.
7. Navigate through String Table > 640 > 1033, then repeat step 6. Though, the text beside number “3751” will be “10230”. Remember to compile the script! Very important!
8. Save the file by going to File > Save or pressing CTRL + S.
9. Go back to your ELEVATED command prompt window and enter “taskkill /im explorer.exe /f” to close Explorer. Don’t be scared by everything disappearing! That’s exactly what we want to happen.
10. Let’s change the directory to your Desktop by entering “cd C:Users(your user directory here)Desktop”
11. We’re almost there! Now, let’s move the file over from the Desktop. Enter “copy twinui.dll.mui C:WindowsSystem32en-US” (again, replace en-US with your local credentials as in it-IT or pt-BR” You can find your online if you’re unsure of it.)
12. Enter “Yes” for the message asking if you’d like to overwrite the file.
13. Type “Explorer.exe” to launch explorer again.
14. Go to your Start screen and look at your beautiful custom text!
If you have any questions, please reply and I will respond as soon as I notice!
You’re genius! Great step-by-step instructions. Its working :D :)
^^ Post updated, thanks a lot for your inputs :)
Thanks! I figured it out because I was reviewing the “You need permission to blah blah this folder.” Message which I’ve encountered before and I knew that it meant the file was being used by another programme. So, I used a tool to see which process was using it and it ws explorer. This way, you don’t even need to reboot! Just start explorer again.
Great work, Armani! :)
Thank you so much!
Still cant get it to work after all these tips. Could anyone take remote control of my system and do the hack for me?
Follow Alexander Rhett Cramer’s guide and then take the additional step of running mcbuilder.exe as administrator. Then restart the computer. Worked for me.
would you be willing to contact me by phone and walk me through it Please? Anytime is acceptable.

Thank you.

Worked awesomely well, but a stupid update ruined it and returned it to START text, tried again, but in step 11 it says ACCESS DENIED, 0 FILES COPIED, What do I do?
Tbh I got a Mac a long time ago and I highly recommend it. I have no idea how to get past that. Microsoft just needs to stop. ?
Nevermind, done it again. Thanks for the totally fast reply
