This article shows how to troubleshoot and fix the issue if your Acer laptop is touchpad not working. Incompatible, outdated, or corrupted touchpad drivers can cause this issue. However, sometimes the problem occurs due to the incorrect BIOS settings.
Fix Acer laptop touchpad not working
Use the following fixes if your Acer laptop touchpad is not working. Before proceeding, we suggest you check for Windows Update manually. Install the update (if available).
- Use the dedicated keyboard keys
- Reinstall your touchpad driver
- Check your touchpad settings in BIOS
- Perform System Restore
- Contact Acer Support
Let’s see all these fixes in detail.
1] Use the dedicated keyboard keys
If your Acer laptop has a dedicated Function key to enable and disable the touchpad, you might have pressed it accidentally due to which your touchpad is disabled. Press that key and see if your touchpad starts working again.
Some Acer laptop models have the F7 key to disable the touchpad, whereas, some models have the F2 key for the same. However, this key may be different in your case. If pressing the key alone does not work, press it along with the Fn key.
2] Reinstall your touchpad driver
A corrupt or missing touchpad driver can also cause the touchpad to fail. Visit the official Acer website and type your laptop model name. Now, look for your touchpad driver. Once you find it, download the touchpad driver. Now, you can install the touchpad driver.
3] Check your touchpad settings in BIOS
Some Acer laptop models have two modes for touchpads: Basic and Advanced. The Advanced mode for precision touchpads enables the multi-gesture mode, whereas if you put the touchpad to the Basic mode, it will disable the multi-gesture mode.
The Advanced mode for Acer precision touchpads requires the I2C driver. If you activate the Advanced mode in BIOS but do not install the required drivers, your touchpad will not work. This might be the case with you. Check this in your Acer BIOS.
Turn off the Acer laptop completely. Now, turn it on and press the F2 key to enter the BIOS. The key may be different for your Acer model. When you enter Acer BIOS, move to the Main tab using the arrow keys and highlight the Touchpad using the down arrow key. If it is set to the Advanced mode, switch it back to the Basic mode. This will restore the functionality of your Acer touchpad. But in the Basic mode, you may not be able to use the gestures.
Save the changes, exit BIOS, and restart your laptop. Now, your touchpad should start working again. If you have made multiple changes in BIOS but forget those changes and now your touchpad is not working, you can reset your BIOS to the default settings.
4] Perform System Restore
If the issue persists, we suggest you restore your system to the previous point in time. Select the date for the restore point at which the touchpad was working perfectly.
5] Contact Acer Support
If your problem is not fixed even after performing the System Restore, there might be a hardware issue with your touchpad. We suggest you contact Acer support for help or take your laptop to a professional laptop repair technician (if its warranty is expired).
I hope this helps.
