The Back and Forward buttons are buttons you would see in your browsers that allow users to switch among views they have opened before. The Back and Forward buttons are not present in Outlook by default; you have to open the customized ribbon and enabled it.
Where did the Back button go on Outlook?
The Back button is an icon displayed to the left that allows users to go to the previous page. In Microsoft Outlook, to locate the Back button, you have to open the customized ribbon and search for the Back button to add it to the standard toolbar.
How to add Back and Forward buttons to Outlook Ribbon
Follow the steps below to add the Back and forward buttons to the Outlook ribbon:
- Launch Outlook.
- Right-click the standard toolbar and select customize the ribbon option.
- In the Choose command from the list box, select All Commands.
- Now, search for the Back command button and select it.
- On the right, click the New Group button.
- Click the Rename button to rename the custom group.
- A Rename dialog box will open.
- Rename the custom group and select an icon, then click OK.
- Click the Add button, the Back command will appear under the custom group.
- Now we will add the Forward button.
- In the Choose command from the list box, select All Commands.
- Now, search for the Home (mail) tab Forward command button and select it.
- Click the Add button, the Home (mail) tab Forward command will appear under the custom group.
- Then click OK.
Launch Outlook.
Right-click the standard toolbar and select Customize the ribbon option.
In the Choose command from list box, select All Commands.
Now, search for the Back command button and select it.
On the right, click the New Group button.
Click the Rename button to rename the custom group.
A Rename dialog box will open.
Rename the custom group and select an icon, then click OK.
Click the Add button, the Back command will appear under the custom group.
Now we will add the Forward button.
In the Choose command from list box, select All Commands.
When searching for a Forward command you will see more than one. In this tutorial, we selected the Forward (Nav Forward) command button.
Click the Add button, the Forward (Nav Forward) command will appear under the custom group.
Then click OK.

How do I show the Reply and Forward icon in Outlook?
The reply button is used to reply to the sender of the message and the Forward button is to forward the message to someone else. To display the reply or forward button, you have to open the customized ribbon and search for the reply and forward button, then add them to the standard toolbar. In Outlook, there are several forward buttons; you have to choose the Forward Home (Mail) tab Respond| Forward (Forward) button so that you can respond to people.
