Computer won’t restart after Windows Update
If your Windows computer won’t restart after the Windows Update, use these fixes to resolve the issue:
- Force shutdown your computer and start it again
- Run Startup Repair
- Uninstall Windows Update via Advanced Options
- Perform System Restore
- Reset your PC
According to the user’s feedback, they cannot log in to their systems because their computer shows the manufacturer’s or Windows logo when they restart their computer after installing the Windows Update. Hence, you may need to enter the Advanced Options screen (Windows Recovery Environment) to resolve this problem.
Let’s start with all the options you have now.
1] Force shutdown of your computer
If your computer shows the manufacturer’s logo on boot after installing the Windows Update and is stuck there, you can try this. If the installation of Windows Update is completed, force shut down your computer by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds. After completely shutting down your computer, restart it and see if the problem is fixed.
2] Run Startup Repair
You can also try running the Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a built-in tool in Windows computers that helps fix boot issues. You can access it in the Advanced Startup Options.
To run Startup Repair, you have to enter the Windows Recovery Environment. Force shut down your computer and start it by pressing and holding the Shift key.
If this does not work, you have to interfere with the normal boot process of Windows to enter the Recovery Environment. Here are the steps to do this:
- Press and hold the power button to shut down your computer.
- Turn on your computer. When you see the Windows logo or your computer manufacturer’s logo on the screen, immediately press and hold the power button to shut down your computer again.
Follow the above steps until your computer enters the recovery mode. You will see the Preparing Automatic Repair message on your screen. Now, you are in the Windows Recovery Environment.
Now, select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
Do not interrupt the process. Let the repair be completed. After the Startup Repair is completed, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.
3] Uninstall Windows Update via Advanced Options
If the Startup Repair fails to fix this issue, you can uninstall the Windows Update. Windows Updates can cause problems. In such cases, you can uninstall the recently installed Windows Update.
You can easily uninstall Windows Updates via Windows 11/10 Settings. But in your case, your PC does not boot. Therefore, you have to enter the Windows Recovery Environment. We have already talked about the steps to boot into Windows RE.
In Windows RE, select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Now, select the recently installed Windows Update to uninstall it.
4] Perform System Restore
Uninstalling the Windows Updates should fix the issue. If not, you can run the System Restore tool to restore your system to the previous working state. Again, you have to use Windows Recovery Environment for the same.
After entering WinRE, select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Select the Restore Point before which you installed the Windows Update. If the Restore Point is not available, you have to reset your PC.
5] Reset your PC
If none of the solutions work, then try to reset your PC. Use the following steps to reset your PC.
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Select the Keep my files option because this will not delete your data.
Wait until your system is reset successfully.
I hope the above solutions helped you to fix this issue.
