Let us talk about them in detail.
1] Save your progress and terminate Microsoft Sharepoint process
Microsoft.shar is Microsoft Sharepoint, it is a platform where all the organization members can collaborate and manage their documents. However, our first solution involves disabling the service before closing it. So, first of all, make sure that you have saved all the changes, since it is an online platform all the progress is automatically saved, then, open the Task Manager, look for Microsoft Sharepoint in running processes, right-click on it, and select End Task.
2] Disable Microsoft Sharepoint from auto startup
If Microsoft Sharepoint is not an integral part of your workflow, we recommend you disable it from auto startup. You can disable it even if it is important for your work as you can then manually open it. To do so, all you have to do is in the Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, look for Microsoft Sharepoint, right-click, and select Disable. You can also disable other Microsoft 365 applications including Teams from Startup.
3] Reregister OneDrive
In this solution, we are going to make changes to the registry. So, before going forward, make sure to take a backup of your registry entries. To do so, you need to open the Registry Editor, go to File > Export, select a location, give it a name, and click on Save. Once done, follow the on-screen instructions.
- Unlink OneDrive and terminate its session using the Task Manager as shown above.
- Hit Win + R, type “regedit”, and press Enter.
- Click Yes when the UAC prompt appears.
- Now, navigate to
HKEY_USERS\CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft
. - Select and delete the OneDrive folder.
- Then, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
. - Look for the Microsoft.list entry and remove it.
- We now have to uninstall OneDrive, to do so, open Settings, go to Apps > Installed apps, search for “OneDrive”, click on the three dots, and select Uninstall.
- Now, reboot your computer.
- Once your system is online, download a fresh copy of OneDrive, and install it on your computer.
Finally, you can log in to your account and see if the issue is resolved.
4] Troubleshoot in Clean Boot
There is a possibility that some other program is using the Microsoft.shar service and is having some issues. However, since we are not sure what that is, we first need to investigate. To do so, we will start your system in Clean Boot, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open “msconfig” from the Start Menu.
- Once the System Configuration interface pops up, go to General tab, untick Load Startup Items checkbox, and ensure that Load System Services and Use Original boot configuration are checked.
- Go to the Services tab.
- Select the Hide All Microsoft Services checkbox, uncheck any service related to Microsoft Sharepoint (including other Microsoft 365 services) and click on Disable all.
- Go to Startup > Open Task Manager.
- Disable all the Startup apps by right-clicking and selecting Disable.
- Close the Task Manager.
- Now, click on Apple > Ok and restart your comptuer.
Your computer will start without any third-party app and with only Microsoft 365 services, including other essential Windows Services. You can now try shutting down your computer and notice if the error message reappears. If you can’t see the message, go ahead; there is a third-party service causing the issue. You can manually enable services and stumble upon the culprit to resolve it. Once you know the cause, you can disable, uninstall, or reinstall the related program.
5] Repair Office or Microsoft 365 Installation
If all else fails, our last resort is to repair the Microsoft 365 or Office installed on your system. To do so, open Settings, go to Apps > Installed apps, search for Microsoft 365 (or Office), click on three dots, and select Modify. Now, first do a Quick Repair and see if that helps. If that does not help, go with Online Repair.
Hopefully, you can resolve the issue using the solutions mentioned here.
