Starting with Windows 10 2004, Microsoft has decoupled Cortana from Windows 10. It is now available as a standalone app and doesn’t offer most of the special features it used to earlier. What is left of Cortana are basic commands. You can launch it by pressing Win+C. However, if you launch it, and you receive a message like say – Sorry, but Cortana is not available in English (India) at this time, then this post will help you resolve it.
It has been reported by users in the forum that Cortana went missing after the Windows 10 2004 upgrade.
Cortana is not available on Windows 10
Cortana is available in many languages, and the chances are that it will be disabled on your computer if the language is not supported. However, if you have enabled Cortana by other means, you will receive this message. That said, there are two options here. The first is to use a language in which Cortana works, and the second is to install Cortana from Microsoft Store. In either case, language and support for the country are equally important.
Set language supported by Cortana
Here is the list of languages for which Cortana is available across the world:
- Australia: English
- Brazil: Portuguese
- Canda: English/French
- China: Chinese (Simplified)
- France: French
- Germany: German
- India: English
- Italy: Italian
- Japan: Japanese
- Mexico: Spanish
- Spain: Spanish
- United Kingdom: English
- United States: English
So set the language in Windows
- Open Windows Settings > Time and Language > Language
- Select one of the above languages as default or preferred language.
- Done that, try relaunching Cortana, and it should be working as expected.
Install Cortana from Microsoft Store
If Cortana is not available on your computer at all, then you can choose to install it. While it is strange but it happened to me. Cortana was installed at the time of installing the 2004 update, but later it went missing. The only reason it could be that I might have changed something in the system. That said if you cannot find Cortana on the computer, follow this link to install Cortana on Windows 10. It will prompt you to open Microsoft Store. Do that, and then click on the Get button when Cortana is listed.
Once Cortana is installed, you can right-click on the taskbar and make sure to enable it on it. The next time you want to launch Cortana, you can do so by pressing Win + C keyboard shortcut. It will instantly switch to listening mode, and you can get a few things done, which includes email, scheduling meetings, and so on.
I hope the post was useful and you were able to install Cortana and resolve the error.
