Fix OneNote error 0xE00009C8
Use the following suggestions to fix OneNote error 0xE00009C8 bb0r. Before going through these fixes, check your internet connection and make sure it is stable.
- Sign out and sign in to OnenNote
- Manually sync your notebook(s)
- Clear OneNote cache
- Create a new notebook
- Try to open the notebook through your browser
- Repair OneNote
- Uninstall and reinstall OneNote
All these fixes are explained below in detail.
1] Sign out and sign in to OneNote
The first step is to sign out and sign back in. Follow these steps:
- Open OneNote and click on the File menu.
- Click Account on the left side.
- Click Sign out.
- Close OneNote and restart your computer.
- Open OneNote and sign back in.
2] Manually sync your notebook(s)
If the above fix does not work, you can also try to sync your notebooks manually. The following steps will guide you on this:
- Open OneNote.
- Click on the File menu.
- Select Info from the left side. You will see the list of all your notebooks.
- Click Settings and then click Sync for the problematic notebook.
Now, check if the issue persists.
3] Clear OneNote cache
A corrupt OneNote cache can also cause syncing issues. If this is the case with you, clearing the OneNote cache can help. To clear the OneNote cache, open the Run command box and type appdata. Click OK. This will open the AppData folder. Now, navigate to the following path:
Local > Microsoft > OneNote > 16.0
In the above path, you may find another folder instead of 16.0, depending on your Office suite version. First, close OneNote and then delete the cache folder. The deleted cache folder will be created automatically the next time you open OneNote.
4] Create a new notebook
If the error persists, create a new notebook and see if it syncs to the cloud. If yes, you can copy the contents from the problematic notebook to the new notebook. To do this, right-click each section of the problematic notebook and Move or Copy. A new window will open. Select the newly created notebook and click Copy. OneNote will automatically create a new section in the new notebook and copy the contents from the previous notebook. Repeat this process to copy all the sections. Once, you are done, you can delete the previous notebook.
5] Try to open the notebook through your browser
Open your web browser and open OneNote for the Web. Sign in to OneNote for the Web in your web browser with the same Microsoft account. After that, rename your problematic notebook online and then move it to a different folder in OneDrive. Now, open that folder in OneDrive in your web browser and locate that OneNote notebook. Select that notebook and click Open > Open in OneNote.
If you get a prompt in your web browser, accept it. The notebook will then open in OneNote. This time, it should start syncing without the error.
6] Repair OneNote
If the error persists, repairing OneNote can help. Follow the instructions provided below to repair OneNote:
- Close OneNote (if it is open).
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps or Apps > Apps & features (whichever is applicable).
- Search for Microsoft OneNote.
- Select it and click Modify. In Windows 11, the Modify option will appear after clicking on the three dots.
- Click Yes in the UAC Prompt.
- Select Online Repair and click Repair.
7] Uninstall and reinstall OneNote
If the above steps do not help, uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft OneNote will help. If you have installed it from Microsoft Store, you can uninstall it through Settings as an individual app, otherwise, you have to completely uninstall the Office suite and then reinstall the Office suite.
You can use the Microsoft SaRA tool to uninstall Microsoft Office. Before uninstalling it, make sure you have its activation key, as you will need to reactivate the license when you install it again.
I hope this helps.
