1] Verify available space
OneNote might not be able to sync notebooks if there is no space available.
So verify whether the notebook is stored. It could be on OneDrive or SharePoint.
If your notebook is stored on OneDrive, you will have to create space there.
You can open your OneDrive account and check the storage section (as shown in the image). You can also empty the Recycle Bin to free up space. To do so, visit this page at onedrive.live.com and click on the Empty recycle bin option.
Also, check if you’re running out of disk space on your computer, and free up some disk space here, too. You might want to clear the OneNote Cache.
If your notebook is stored on SharePoint, you will have to contact the SharePoint administrator.
2] Optimize OneNote notebook
When you optimize the OneNote notebook, it makes some free storage for new ones. To optimize the OneNote notebook, follow these steps:
- Open the OneNote app on your computer.
- Click on File > Options.
- Go to the Save & Backup tab.
- Head to the Optimizing files section.
- Click on the Optimize All Files Now button.
- Click the OK button.
3] Delete existing backup
OneNote creates backups and stores them on your local storage or C drive. If your C drive doesn’t have much space, you might end up seeing the same error. That is why you need to follow these steps to check and delete old or existing and unnecessary backups:
- Press Win+R to open the Run prompt.
- Type %localappdata% and hit the Enter button.
- Navigate to this path: Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\Backup
- Delete unnecessary backups from here.
- Restart the OneNote app.
4] Clear OneNote cache
Sometimes, it could be a bug or glitch that could be resolved by clearing the cache. To clear the OneNote cache, follow these steps:
- Open the File Explorer.
- Navigate to this path: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0
- Right-click on the Cache folder and delete it.
- Restart the OneNote app.
That’s all.
How to check OneNote storage
As OneDrive stores all the OneNote data, you need to check the OneDrive storage if you want to find the details about it. To do so, simply open the OneDrive website and head to the Storage section.
However, to manage your storage, you need to click on used storage or visit onedrive.live.com.
