How to change the tick in a check box in Word
Follow the steps below to change the tick of a check box from a checkmark to ‘x’ or any other symbol in Word:
- Launch Microsoft Word.
- On the Developer tab, click the check box button.
- Draw the check box on the Word document.
- Click the check box, then click the Properties button.
- Adjacent Checked symbol, click the Change button.
- Search for the X symbol, then click OK for both dialog boxes.
- The tick in the check box is changed to an X symbol.
Launch Microsoft Word.
On the Developer tab, click the check box button in the Controls group.
Draw the check box on the Word document.
Now we will change the tick in the check box to an X.
Click the check box, then click the Properties button in the Controls group or right-click the check box and select Properties from the menu.
A Content Control Properties dialog box will open.
Under Check Box Properties, beside Checked Symbol, click the Change button.
A Symbol dialog box will open search for the X symbol, then click OK for both dialog boxes. If you want to find the x used in this tutorial, select Wingdings2 from the Font list box.

How do I lock a checkbox?
Follow the steps to lock a checkbox in Microsoft Word:
- Select the check box, then go to the Developer tab and select the Properties button.
- A Content Control Properties dialog box will open.
- Check the check box for Contents cannot be Edited under the Locking section.
- Then click the OK button.
- Then try to click the check box, and you will notice you cannot edit the checkbox.

Why can’t I remove content control?
If you cannot remove a content control in Microsoft Word, it means that the Content Control cannot be deleted option is enabled. Follow the steps below to disable the Content Control cannot be deleted option is enabled.
- Select the check box, then go to the Developer tab and select the Properties button.
- A Content Control Properties dialog box will open.
- Uncheck the check box for Content Control cannot be deleted under the Locking section.
- Then click OK.
