How do you link a file in OneNote?

But do you know, you can also link a file to any custom text in OneNote? This file can be a Word file, an Excel file, a PDF file, or a simple text file. After linking a file to a custom text in OneNote, when you click on that text, OneNote will open that file on your computer.

1] How to link a file in OneNote 2016
The steps that we will list here are also applicable to other OneNote versions, like OneNote 2013, 2010, etc. We have explained here the steps to link a Word document to OneNote 2016. By following the same process, you can link a file with any extension to OneNote.
- Launch OneNote and open your notebook in it.
- Select a custom text which you want to link with a file on your hard drive.
- Now, you have to hyperlink the selected text. For this, go to “Insert > link” or simply press the Ctrl + K keys on your keyboard. After that, a new window will open.
- Click on the Browse button and select the file that you want to link. After selecting the file from your computer, click OK and then OK again to save the link in OneNote.
- The custom text has been linked to the file that you have selected. Now, you can open the file directly from OneNote with a single click.
When you place your mouse cursor over the hyperlinked text, OneNote will display the complete path of the linked file.

Hence, if you want to link a file to OneNote app for Windows 10, you have to upload it to OneDrive.

- Open OneDrive in your web browser and sign in to your account.
- Now, upload the file to OneDrive. For this, go to “Upload > Files” and select the file on your computer.

- Open OneDrive in your Web browser and log in to your account.
- Go to “Upload > Folder” and select the folder from your computer.
- After the folder is uploaded, copy the link from the address bar of your web browser.
- Launch OneNote app for Windows 10.
