How to install Gmail app in Windows 11

In this article, we will show you how to install the Gmail app in Windows 11/10. There is no official Gmail app available in Windows 11, but we can create a desktop shortcut to open Gmail by installing the Gmail Web Progressive Web App from Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers.

You can install Gmail as an app using Chrome and Edge browser. These browsers let you install websites as apps. So once you install Gmail as an app, it will work the same as a dedicated app. Do note that this feature is not available in Mozilla Firefox.

Install the Gmail app on Windows 11 by using Edge

Edge browser allows you to install Gmail as a Progressive Web App. To do so, take these steps:

Launch the Edge browser from the Start menu.
Go to the Gmail website by visiting Gmail.com.
Sign into your Google account.
Click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
Click on Apps.
Click on the Install this site as an app.
Now, click on Install.

After installing the Gmail app from Microsoft Edge, you can also choose your preferred options for the Gmail app such as Pin to taskbar, Pin to Start, Create Desktop shortcut, and then click the Allow button.

Install the Gmail app on Windows by using Chrome

Google Chrome also gives you a feature to Install the Gmail Progressive Web App on your Windows 11 computer. The following instructions will guide you on this.

Open your Chrome browser.
Go to the Gmail website by visiting Gmail.com.
Sign into your Google account.
Click the three dots in the upper right corner.
Click on More tools.
Click on the Create shortcut.
A pop-up will arrive on your screen, name it Gmail.
Select the Open as Window option.
Now, click on Create.

The Gmail app shortcut shows you on your desktop screen. You can easily open the web version of the Gmail app.

How to use Gmail app for Edge

If you install the Gmail app from Microsoft Edge, you will get some additional features as compared to installing the same from Google Chrome. Let’s have a look.

After opening the Gmail app on your system, you can view all your emails just like the Gmail in Edge browser. On the top left side, there is a Refresh icon. Click on it to refresh the Gmail app. Click on the three horizontal dots on the top right side to view more options in the Gmail app.

The Gmail app for Edge has one additional feature known as Sidebar. This feature is not present in the Gmail app for Chrome. You can configure the Sudebar to open the links from your Gmail in the Sidebar or in the Edge browser. To do so, click on the three horizontal dots and select Sidebar > Open external links in sidebar. To undo the action, repeat the same step. Basically, you have to check and uncheck the Open links in the sidebar option.

How to use Gmail app for Chrome

The features in the Gmail app for Chrome are almost the same as we described above (the Gmail app for Edge). Open the Gmail app you installed from Chrome and click on the three vertical dots to view all the available options.

Do note that if you sign out your Gmail account in your web browser, you will automatically be signed out in its respective app.

Both Gmail apps for Edge and Chrome have the Cast option that allows you to mirror your Gmail to another supported device. I have tested it to cast my Gmail screen to my TV. To use this feature, follow the steps provided below:

Go to the Gmail app.
Click on the three dots upper right corner.
In Gmail app for Chrome, click on the Cast option.
In Gmail app for crosoft Edge, select More tools > Cast media to device.

To stop casting, tap the Cast button again and select Stop.

How to uninstall Gmail app for Edge browser on Windows 11

If you want to uninstall your Gmail app on Windows 11. Follow the steps mentioned below.

Open the Gmail app.
Click on three dots upper right corner or you can press (Alt+F).
Click on App settings.
Now, click on Uninstall.
If you want to clear the data from the browser, then select the Also clear data from Microsoft Edge checkbox.
Now, click Remove.

How to uninstall Gmail app for Chrome browser on Windows 11

Open the Gmail app.
Click on the three dots upper right corner.
Now, click on Uninstall Gmail.
If you want to clear the browser data, select the Also clear data from Chrome checkbox.
Now, click Remove.
