Sometimes you may face browser issues, and extensions could be an issue. To figure it out, one of the methods is to uninstall them one by one, or you can choose first to check if extensions are the problem. This post will share how you can open Microsoft Edge without Extensions or Addons.
How to launch Microsoft Edge without Extensions
To achieve this, first, we need to ensure Microsoft Edge is not a running process, not even in the background, and second, we will need to add a parameter to launch Edge without the extensions.
- Remove Microsoft Edge from the running processes list
- Modify the Microsoft Edge shortcut
You will need admin permission to execute these methods.
1] Remove Microsoft Edge from the running processes list
Before getting started, make sure you do the following things:
Open Microsoft Edge, click the three-dots menu at the top right corner of your Edge browser.
Next, click on the Settings option from the context menu.
Click on the System and performance option from the left pane.
Disable Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
Close Edge.
Next, open the Task Manager, find the Microsoft Edge option, right-click, and choose the End task.
If you can’t find Microsoft Edge, sort the running apps list by name, and then keep pressing M key on the keyboard until you find the Edge browser. If you find it, right-click and terminate the process.

2] Modify the Microsoft Edge shortcut
Now, let us move on to how to launch Microsoft Edge without Extensions:
- Right-click the Microsoft Edge shortcut icon on the desktop and choose Properties from the context menu.
- Activate the Target field with your mouse and then click Enter.
- Add the following command line switch at the end after msedge.exe.
--disable-extensions
- Click Continue when the “You will need to provide administrator permission to change the settings” pop-up message box appears.
- To save the changes, click Apply and then OK.
Note: Make sure the Target field’s entire string resembles the following:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --disable-extensions
- Edge will now open without extensions when you click the shortcut to launch it.
- Close Edge if you still see enabled extensions. Launch Task Manager, look for the Edge process, and end all instances.
- Now, try opening Edge once more. The Extensions menu item option is currently grayed out in the menu, as you can see. That implies that Edge has disabled all extensions.
- To allow extensions once more, and if the problem with Edge is fixed, delete the command line switch placed above in the Target field of the Edge shortcut properties, then open Edge again.
