Merge is the process of becoming one, or the cause to combine to form a single unit. In Microsoft Publisher you can use the Group and Ungroup feature to merge and unmerge objects in your publication.
How to merge shapes in Publisher
Follow the steps below to merge Shapes in Microsoft Publisher using Group and Ungroup feature:
- On the Insert tab, click Shapes in the Illustration group.
- Draw the shape into the publication.
- Draw another shape into the publication.
- Join the shapes together.
- Press the Shift key on the keyboard to select both of the shapes.
- On the Shape Format tab select Group in the Arrange group.
- The Shapes will merge as one.
- To unmerge the shapes click Ungroup in the Arrange group.
There are two methods to group shapes in Publisher.
Method 1: On the Insert tab, click Shapes in the Illustration group.
Draw the shape into the publication.
Draw another shape into the publication.
Join the shapes together.

How do I edit shapes in Publisher?
In Microsoft Publisher, you do not have to merge text boxes with your shapes, you can edit them. Follow the steps below to edit shapes in Microsoft Publisher:
- Insert a shape into your publication.
- Right-click the shape and select Add Text from the context menu.
- The other method to edit the shape is to click the shape.
- On the Shape Format tab, click the Edit Text button in the Insert Shapes group.
- Enter text into your shape.
- The Shape Format tab contains tools to format your shapes.
How do you merge text boxes in Publisher?
Follow the steps below to merge text boxes in Publisher:
- Insert text boxes into your publication.
- Right-click one of the text boxes and select Create Text Box Link for the context menu.
- The cursor will become a Pitcher.
- Use the Pitcher cursor to click the other text box.
- The text in the second text box will appear in the first text box.
