How to move Bookmarks from one User Account to another in Edge

Microsoft Edge is one of the most powerful web browsers. It is also loaded with some unique features that are not available in other web browsers. Like Google Chrome, you can create multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge. The feature to create multiple user profiles is useful if there is more than one user of a particular web browser. Sometimes, a user profile in a web browser gets corrupted. In this case, we have to create another user profile for ourselves. In this article, we will show you how to move Bookmarks from one User Account to another in Microsoft Edge.

How do I save and import bookmarks in Edge?

You can save your bookmarks in Edge as an HTML file. After saving the bookmarks in HTML format, you can upload the file to another user profile in Edge. You can also use the same HTML file to import bookmarks in Edge on another computer. This process will import all your bookmarks from one user profile to another in Edge.

In addition to HTML files, an option to import bookmarks from other popular web browsers is also available in Edge. Hence, if you are a Firefox or Chrome user, you can import your bookmarks from the same to Edge.

How to move Bookmarks from one User Account to another in Edge

You can move Bookmarks from one User Account to another in Edge by using any of the following two methods:

1. By using the Import browser data feature
2. By using the Bookmarks file

Let’s see both of these methods in detail.

1] Move Bookmarks from one User Account to another in Edge by using the Import browser data feature

This is the easiest method to import bookmarks from one profile to another in Edge. But for this, first, you have to export the bookmarks of your existing user profile in HTML format. After exporting your bookmarks, follow the steps written below:

1. Open Microsoft Edge.
2. Switch to the newly created profile.
3. Open Edge Settings and then select the Profile option from the left side.
4. On the right side, scroll down and select import browser data.
5. Click Choose what to import.
6. Select Favorites or bookmarks HTML file in the import from drop-down menu.
7. Make sure that the Favorites or bookmarks checkbox is selected.
8. Now, click Choose file.
9. Select the bookmarks HTML file from your computer and then click Open.

After following the above steps, all your bookmarks from one user profile will be imported to another user profile in Edge.

2] Transfer Bookmarks from one User Account to another in Edge by using the Bookmarks file

This method does not require exporting the Edge bookmarks in HTML format. If you know the location where Edge stores your bookmarks on the disk, you can easily copy that file and paste it into the newly created user profile in Edge.

Where are Microsoft Edge bookmarks stored?

All the bookmarks that you create in your user profile in Edge are saved on a particular location on your hard drive. This location is:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

In the above path, the Username represents the name of the user profile on Windows 11/10. Replace the Username in the above path with your Windows 11/10 user profile name. After that, copy the path and paste it into the address bar of the File Explorer, and hit Enter. Now, look for the Bookmarks file.

In the above path, Default represents the default user profile in Edge. The user profile that you create for the first time in Edge is the default user profile. After this default profile, every user profile that you create remains available as Profile 1, Profile 2, etc., in the User Data folder on your hard drive.

If you want to import bookmarks from a profile other than the default user profile, first, you have to identify the correct user profile (if multiple user profiles are created). Because the user profiles are saved with the names Profile 1, Profile 2, etc., it is important that you copy the Bookmarks file from the right user profile folder. To do so, go to the following path and follow the below-listed steps:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data

1. Open a user profile folder, say Profile 1.
2. Look for the Bookmarks file.
3. Double-click on the Bookmarks file to open it in your default text editor, which is Windows 11/10 Notepad in most cases. Or, right-click on the Bookmarks file and go to “Open with > Notepad.”

The Notepad file will show you the bookmarks saved in that particular user profile in Edge. You can easily view the names of your Bookmarks and URLs in Notepad. This will let you know if this user profile folder belongs to that particular user profile in Edge or not. If not, open the Bookmarks file in another user profile folder, say Profile 2.

An alternate way to reach the above-mentioned path is:

1. Open the Run command box (Win + R).
2. Type %userprofile% and click OK.
3. Click on the AppData folder. AppData is a hidden folder. Hence, it is not visible by default.
4. To view the AppData folder, you have to show the hidden file and folders in Windows.
5. Now, go to “Local > Microsoft > Edge > User Data.”

After identifying the correct Bookmarks file, you can easily copy it to another user profile folder. The following steps will help you with that:

1. Copy the Bookmarks file from the host user profile folder.
2. Go back to the User Data folder
3. Open the targeted user profile folder and
4. Paste the copied Bookmarks file into that folder.

Now, here is a question, how can you identify the correct user profile folder (the folder to which you want to paste the Bookmarks file)? If you do not know this, you can copy the Bookmarks file to an incorrect user profile folder. This will create a problem because all the bookmarks in that user profile will be replaced by the new bookmarks.

When you create a new user profile in Edge, the respective folder to that user profile is automatically created on your hard drive. But this user profile folder does not have a Bookmarks file until you create your first bookmark in Edge. If you have not created a single bookmark in Edge, you will not see a Bookmarks file in the user profile folder. Therefore, before pasting the copied Bookmarks file into the targeted folder, make sure if it already has the Bookmarks folder or not.

After copying the Bookmarks file, all your bookmarks from one user profile will be imported to another user profile in Edge. To check this, open Microsoft Edge. If it is already opened, close it and launch it again. Now, switch to the newly created user profile in Edge and press the Ctrl + Shift +B to bring the Bookmarks menu. You will see all your bookmarks there.

By following the second method, you can import the bookmarks from one user profile to multiple user profiles in Edge simply by copying the Bookmarks file to the user profile folder on your disk.

How do I manage bookmarks in Edge?

There are multiple ways that you can use to manage favorites and bookmarks in Edge. You can create different folders on the Edge Bookmarks tab. In addition to this, Edge also lets you sort all your favorites or bookmarks in alphabetical order. These features are helpful if you have a lot of bookmarks in Edge.
