This post explains how to remove a user profile from Microsoft Edge. Deleting a user profile from MS Edge is easy. However, if the account is linked to the computer’s Windows profile, it keeps showing up even after you remove it from the Edge Settings.
Many users have been reporting that even after removing a user profile from the Edge browser, they are not able to make the browser ‘forget’ their MS account ID. This poses a bit of a security risk as anyone who has access to their system can sign in to Edge through the MS account and view sensitive information (the browser doesn’t ask for a password while signing the user back into the account).
In this post, we will look at how to remove a user profile from Edge, as well as its associated MS account, on a Windows 11/10 PC.
How to remove a User Profile from Microsoft Edge
First of all, let us quickly see how to remove a user profile from Microsoft Edge.
1] Remove a user profile from the Edge browser
Launch the Edge browser and click on the three-dots icon next to your profile picture in the top-right corner of the browser window. Select Settings.
The Edge Settings page will open in a new tab. Your current profile will be listed at the top of the Profiles section. If this is the profile you want to delete, stay there. Otherwise, keep scrolling through the page. You will see more Edge profiles listed at the bottom.
Click on the Switch button next to the profile you want to delete (In order to delete a profile in Edge, you need to select that profile as your current profile. If you delete the only profile you have in Edge, the browser will create a new profile for you with default settings).
Once you select the desired profile as your current profile, click on the three-dots icon next to the profile name on the Settings page. Select Remove from the dropdown.
Then click on the Remove profile button in the confirmation popup to delete the profile from the Edge browser. Once the profile is deleted, Edge will switch you to the next available profile.
Note: You can also delete a profile by signing out of the MS account associated with the profile. Click on the Sign out button next to the profile name on the Settings page. A confirmation popup will appear. Check the option for ‘clear favorites, history, passwords, and other browsing data from this device’ and click on the Sign out button to confirm the action. Once you sign out of the MS account, you will no longer see the profile listed in Edge.
2] Unlink the MS account from your PC
A Microsoft account allows you to sync all your profile data to the cloud, so that you may access your browsing history, passwords, auto-fill info, extensions, etc., across multiple devices. However, when you remove a user profile from Edge that was created using an MS account on your Windows 11/10 PC, you also need to unlink the MS account from the PC. This is because as long as the account remains linked to your PC, it may prompt you to restore the profile data back on your PC (with just a click of a button).
To completely remove the profile, click on the Start button icon and select Settings. Select Accounts in the left panel.
In the right panel, scroll down to the Account settings section and click on the Email & accounts option. Look for the MS account under the Accounts used by other apps section.
Click on the account name to expand the section. You will see a Remove button next to the Remove account option at the bottom. Click on that button. Click on Yes in the confirmation popup that appears. The MS account will be unlinked from your PC.
This is how you may fully remove a user profile from Microsoft Edge. I hope you find this useful.
