How to Alphabetize in Google Sheets
To sort alphabetically in Google Sheets, you can use any one of these three methods:
- Using the Data tab
- Using Sort and Filter
- Sorting with column header
1] Using the Data tab
If a user wants to arrange their dataset into alphabetical order, they can use the Sort Range feature, where the user can choose to arrange their data from A-Z or Z-A. Follow the steps below to sort data by using the Data tab.
Select the range, then go to the Data tab, hover the cursor over Sort Range, then select Sort Range by column A (A-Z).
The data is arranged in alphabetical order.
You can also use the Advanced range sorting options.
Select your range, go to the Data tab, hover the cursor over Sort Range, and select the Advanced range sorting options.
A dialog box will appear; click Sort.
2] Using Sort and Filter
The Sort and Filter feature is the quickest method to sort the dataset from A to Z.
Select the range.
Right-click the range, then select Create a filter from the menu.
A filter will appear on the first row that is highlighted.
Click the Sort and Filter button and select the Sort to A to Z option.
The range is in alphabetical order.
If you want to remove the filter from the dataset, right-click the Filter button and select Remove Filter.
3] Sorting with column header
You can also use the column header to sort data in your spreadsheet. Follow the steps below.
Click the drop-down arrow for the column header and select Sort Sheet from A to Z.
The data is sorted from A to Z.

How do I alphabetize in Google Sheets without mixing Data?
If there is a chance that you have selected the header of the table but do not want to mix the header along with the rest of the data. Follow the steps below to alphabetize in Google Sheets without mixing data.
- Select the range, then go to the Data tab, hover the cursor over Sort Range, then select the Advanced range sorting options.
- When the dialog box opens, check the ‘Data has header row’ check box, then Click Sort.
- You will see that all the data in the table is sorted from A to Z without the header mixing with the data.

How do I add a sort button in Google Sheets?
If you want to sort multiple columns, you should click the Add another sort column button.
- Select the entire data set.
- Go to the Data tab, hover the cursor over Sort Range, and select Advanced range sorting options.
- When the dialog box appears, check the ‘Data has header row’ checkbox.
- Select the A to Z option, then click the Add another sort column button.
- Then click Sort.
