When using your browser on Windows 11/10, you may notice that one or more graphic icons or some fonts are missing from the web page. Confirming this behavior, Microsoft has outlined the reasons for this issue along with solutions.
Icons and Fonts missing from a web page
This problem can occur if your Windows 11/10 is set to block Untrusted fonts or some security/mitigation options have been set. There are three ways you can address this issue.
How to block or allow Web Font downloads in Windows 11/10
1] Using Group Policy
This Group Policy setting helps you protect your company from attacks that may originate from untrusted or attacker-controlled font files. However, with the rollout of Windows 11/10 security configuration baseline, Microsoft has decided to remove the recommendation to enable the “Untrusted Font Blocking” Group Policy setting. So, one of the downsides most visible of blocking downloaded and embedded fonts is graphic icons going missing as many web sites rely on them, and blocking them can substantially diminish usability.
To fix this problem, configure the Allow Font Downloads Setting on the Internet, Restricted Zone (On by default) via GPO and add the affected Web sites to the Trusted Sites or Local Intranet Zone, here:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Internet\Control Panel\Security Page\Internet Zone\
On the right-side, double-click on Allow font downloads and select Enabled.
This policy setting allows you to manage whether pages of the zone may download HTML fonts. If you enable this policy setting, HTML fonts can be downloaded automatically. If you enable this policy setting and Prompt is selected in the drop-down box, users are queried whether to allow HTML fonts to download. If you disable this policy setting, HTML fonts are prevented from downloading.
Save the settings and exit.
This policy setting will affect the value of the following Registry key:
HKLM or HKCU \Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3
2] Using Registry Editor
This can also occur if the Untrusted Font Blocking mitigation setting is enabled. Run REGEDIT and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NT\MitigationOptions
Create a DWORD with name MitigationOptions_FontBocking* and value 1000000000000.
Restart the system and see.
3] Temporarily disable Antivirus and see
If the above suggestions do not help resolve the missing icons issue in your browser on Windows 11/10 try and disable your antivirus application. Sometimes, it is also known to prevent the Fonts & Icons from displaying in the browser.
How do I manage fonts in Windows 11?
In Windows 11, you can manage fonts via Windows 11 Settings. Open Windows 11 Settings and go to “Personalization > Fonts.” Here you can browse and install new fonts if you have downloaded them on your disk. Alternatively, you can get more fonts in Microsoft Store. You can search for a particular font using the search box. Select a particular font to change its properties or uninstall it (if it is not a Windows font). Alternatively, you can also install free Font Manager software for Windows 11.
How do I change the default font in Windows 11/10?
If you want to change the default font in Windows 11/10, you have to make changes in your system’s Registry. Incorrect changes in the Registry Editor can make your system unstable and you will experience issues with your system. Hence, before proceeding, create a System Restore Point and back up your Registry. If you do not want to modify your system’s Registry, you can use a third-party tool, like Advanced System Font Changer.
Hope this helps.
