When a keyboard or mouse works in BIOS but not in Windows, it creates problems and makes the computer difficult to use. Such a thing happens to some users. They can use their keyboard or mouse in BIOS, but when they exit BIOS, their keyboard or mouse becomes dead. If you are in such a situation, you can use the solutions provided in this article.
Keyboard or Mouse works in BIOS but not in Windows
If your keyboard or mouse works in BIOS but not in Windows 11/10, use the following solutions to fix the issue.
- Drain residual charge
- Disconnect and reconnect your keyboard or mouse
- Run Startup Repair
- Uninstall Windows Update
- Run the Chkdsk scan
- Roll back or reinstall your keyboard or mouse driver
- Disable the Intel Integrated Sensor Solution driver
- Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Tool in BIOS
- Perform System Restore
Let’s see all these fixes in detail.
1] Drain residual charge
If you are a laptop user, the residual charge might be causing the issue. Drain the residual charge by following the steps written below:
- Press and hold the power button to turn off your laptop.
- Disconnect the power adapter and all the peripherals connected to your laptop.
- Remove the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 to 30 seconds.
- Reinsert the battery.
- Plug in the charger and turn on the switch to provide the power supply.
- Turn on your laptop.
If your laptop has a non-removable battery, skip step 3 above. Check if you can use your keyboard or mouse in Windows or not.
2] Disconnect and reconnect your keyboard or mouse
The second thing that you should do is disconnect and reconnect your keyboard or mouse. You can also try connecting your keyboard or mouse to other USB ports. If another keyboard or mouse is available, you can also try them.
3] Run Startup Repair
The issue might also be occurring due to the corrupted system files. A Startup Repair can fix the problem. To run Startup SRepair, you have to enter the Windows Recovery Environment. If either your keyboard or your mouse is not working, you can enter the Windows RE via Windows 11/10 Settings. But if both the keyboard and mouse are not working in Windows, you can enter the Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting the normal boot process. Follow the steps provided below:
- Press and hold the power button to turn off your computer.
- Press the power button to turn on your computer.
- Immediately press and hold the power button when you see the Windows or manufacturer’s logo.
Repeat the above steps until your PC enters Automatic Repair mode. Now, you are in the Windows Recovery Environment. Now, run Startup Repair.
4] Uninstall Windows Update
Some users reported that this issue started occurring after installing a Windows Update. If either your keyboard or mouse is working, you can easily uninstall the problematic Windows Update via Windows 11/10 Settings. If both the keyboard and the mouse are not working in Windows, you have to use the Windows Recovery Environment to uninstall the recent Windows Update. You can do so by interrupting the normal boot process (we have already talked about this earlier in this article).
On the Automatic Repair screen, select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
5] Run the Chkdsk scan
Bad sectors or logical errors on your C drive can also cause this problem. If your keyboard works, you can log in to Windows and run the Chkdsk scan.
6] Roll back or reinstall your keyboard or mouse driver
Rolling back the keyboard or mouse driver will install the previous driver version. This can fix the issue if a recent update has broken your keyboard or mouse functionality. If you can manage to log into Windows by using other sign-in methods, like Windows Hello Fingerprint (if available), you can roll back your keyboard or mouse driver via the Device Manager.
- Open the Device Manager. If only the mouse works, right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboard or Mouse and other pointing devices branch.
- Right-click on your keyboard or mouse driver and select Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
If the Roll Back option is not available, uninstall the device driver and then restart your computer. This will reinstall the missing driver.

7] Disable the Intel Integrated Sensor Solution driver
The Intel Integrated Sensor Solution Driver regulates the rotation control function of the Gyroscope, Accelerometer, and eCompass sensors in supported devices. According to the reports, some users found it causing this issue. This can be the case with you. You can try disabling it and see if it works. Go through the following instructions:
- Open the Device Manager.
- Expand the System Devices branch.
- Right-click on the Intel Integrated Sensor Solution driver and select Disable device.
- Restart your computer.
8] Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Tool in BIOS
If you have an HP computer, you can use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Tool. It is a tool developed by HP to help users diagnose and fix the hardware issues on their HP computers. You can launch this tool from BIOS.

9] Perform System Restore
The System Restore will take your system to the previous working state. If none of the above solutions worked for you, System Restore will surely work. You can launch this tool via Windows Search. But if you are not able to login to Windows, you can launch it from Windows Recovery Environment.
Enter the Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting the normal boot process as described earlier in this article. Now, go to Advanced Options > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore. Select the restore point before which the problem did not exist.
This should work.
