Why my Laptop is not starting after pressing Power button?

There can be several reasons why your Windows laptop is not starting after pressing the Power button. The most common reasons are RAM issues, a dead Battery, a dirty power button, hardware issues, etc. This article lists some fixes that will help you fix this issue.

Laptop not starting after pressing the Power button

If your Windows laptop is not starting even after pressing the Power button, you can take these steps to address the problem:

Is your laptop fully charged?
Perform a Hard reset
Clean your Laptop
Reseat RAM
Clear CMOS battery
Take your laptop for repair.

1] Is your laptop fully charged?

This is the first thing that you should do. Check if your laptop is fully charged or not. If the battery of your laptop is drained out completely, it will not turn on. In this case, you have to plug in the charger and turn on the switch to provide the power supply to your laptop. Wait for some time and check if it brings any changes. If it does not make any difference, follow the next step.

2] Perform a Hard reset

Performing a hard reset may help fix this problem. A hard reset can help clear up residual charge from the capacitors that may be preventing the laptop from booting correctly. Perform a hard reset and see if it changes the situation. Use the below steps:

Turn off your laptop.
Remove all the peripherals and the charger.
Remove the battery. If your laptop has a non-removable battery, skip this step.
Press and hold the power button for 30 to 45 seconds.
Connect the charger and turn on your laptop.

Some laptops have a pinhole reset button. Check if your laptop has this button. If yes, you can also perform the hard reset via this button. Insert a pin into this pinhole to press the button. This process will reset your laptop. Check if it makes any changes.

3] Clean your Laptop

Dust and dirt can accumulate in the laptop and create a problem with the power button of your laptop. It is important to clean your laptop regularly to remove any accumulated debris. Therefore, we suggest you clean your laptop. Also, if you are not comfortable in cleaning your laptop by yourself, you can take it to a professional.

4] Reseat RAM

If you recently installed new RAM, it might be faulty or incorrectly installed. In this case, we suggest you reseat your RAM. Remove and reseat the RAM, ensuring they’re in the correct slots and fully inserted. Check your motherboard manual for proper placement. If you have more than one RAM, then remove and reseat the RAM one by one.

5] Clear CMOS battery

Clearing the CMOS battery resets all BIOS settings to their defaults. If your laptop is not starting due to a misconfigured BIOS setting, then resetting BIOS to its default values will fix the issue.

You can reset the BIOS setting to its default values by removing and re-inserting the CMOS battery. The CMOS battery is a small coin-shaped battery. To clear the CMOS battery, you have to open your computer case. Turn off your computer and disconnect the power cord to avoid electric shock.

Now, Locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard, remove it, and wait for a few minutes. This will reset the BIOS to its default settings. Reinsert the battery and try booting again.

Do note the orientation of the + and – terminals on the battery. Install the battery in the right orientation; otherwise, your computer will not boot.

6] Take your laptop for repair
