Some users of Microsoft Word have been experiencing a problem recently where they are unable to upload their documents to OneDrive. Instead of uploading the document, Word instead shows the following error message:
UPLOAD FAILED, You are required to sign in to upload your changes to this location
This is clearly a problem with Word or OneDrive since it is possible to save the file locally without any problems. So, how can we get this issue under control so that users can continue taking advantage of what the cloud has to offer?
UPLOAD FAILED, You are required to sign in to upload your changes to this location
There are a few things we can do to resolve this UPLOAD FAILED, You are required to sign in error and as you might expect, were going to talk about these solutions right now:
- Delete Microsoft Office cached files
- Update your version of Microsoft Office
- Disconnect your Work or School account

1] Delete Microsoft Office cached files
The first thing we’re going to do here is to delete the cached files in Microsoft Office Upload Center. Doing this can solve the error plaguing Microsoft Word once and for all.
- Open Office Upload Center right away.
- From there, select the Settings option.
- Finally, click on Delete Cached Files, and that’s it.
For those who are using Windows 11, all you have to do to delete the cached files in Microsoft Office is to perform a clean boot of the operating system.
Go ahead now and check to see if the “You are required to sign in to upload your changes to this location” error is still showing.
2] Update your version of Microsoft Office
Another way to get this problem under control is to update your version of Microsoft Office to the latest version if you haven’t already. There are times when the automatic update doesn’t do what it must when it should, and as such, a manual update is required.
- Open Microsoft Office when you’re ready.
- After that, please click on the File tab.
- Next, you must select Account at the bottom of the left panel.
- Finally, select Update Options, then click on Update Now.
Check now to see if you can upload your document without coming face to face with the error message.
3] Disconnect your Work or School account
We understand some of the users facing this error are using work or school accounts on Windows 11. From what we have seen, the following information can greatly help.
- Close all Microsoft Office 365 applications.
- Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
- From the left panel, select Accounts.
- After that, you are required to click on Access Work or School.
- Find the Office 365 account from the list and Disconnect it from it.
- Once that is done, add the user credentials.
- Open Word, for example.
- Click on a blank Document right away.
- You must now click on File.
- Select the Account option.
- The next step, then, is to click on Fix me.
- Finally, enter the user credentials, and that’s it.
This method should work for those who are using school or work accounts, so let us know if you experience success.
4] Use Credential Manager
- Open Word or any Office program
- Open the File menu > Do to Account.
- Sign out of all existing accounts – under User Information.
- Close the Office program.
- Now open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
- Under Generic Credentials, expand Office credentials
- Click on the Remove link to delete them from the Windows Credentials Manager.
- Finally, open Word > File > Account.
- Sign in with your Office 365 credentials.
This should help!
