Mouse is a quintessential input device of a computer. Without a mouse, navigation becomes hard as we cannot interact with the operating system. Though we have a keyboard and shortcuts to do so, the mouse has its own charm. It comes with flexibility and ease, which a keyboard cannot provide. The mouse pointer and click are the ways to interact with Windows 11/10. They are not automated unless we use an automation program. Our hand needs to move the pointer and physically click on the mouse. If the mouse keeps clicking on its own in Windows 11/10, this guide is for you with fixes to resolve the issue.
Why does the mouse keep clicking on its own in Windows?
There are several reasons why the mouse keeps clicking on its own in Windows 11/10. Some of the major reasons are:
- Debris or dirt at the bottom of the mouse or mousepad might be causing malfunction. Also, label stickers or tiny plastic covers at the bottom of a new mouse might be the cause.
- Sensitivity of the Touchpad and the dust on it.
- The mouse might be faulty or damaged or the port to connect the mouse.
- Mouse clicks automation software or a conflicting software that you might have recently installed.
- You might have enabled the ClickLock feature.
- Remote connections
Let’s see how we can fix the issue.
Mouse keeps clicking on its own in Windows 11/10
When you find the mouse on your computer clicking on its own or the pointer moving automatically in Windows 11/10, the following fixes can help you fix it.
- Examine the mouse/touchpad physically
- Check the port
- Adjust the settings of the mouse
- Disable the touchscreen
- Uninstall mouse automation software
- Disable the Touchpad
- Check remote connections
- Check Click Lock setting
- Reinstall Mouse driver
Let’s get into the details of each method and fix the issue.
1] Examine the mouse/touchpad physically
The first thing to do when the mouse is clicking on its own is to check the mouse physically for any debris or damage. Check if the sensor under the mouse has any debris if the labels are coming off or any plastic stickers under the mouse. If you find anything such as that, remove them. Check the mouse buttons to see if they are stuck. Also, clean the mousepad and put it on a flat surface. If you use only Touchpad, see if there is any dust on it and clean it.
2] Check the port
The USB port you have used to connect the external mouse might be faulty. Try using the mouse on another port and see if you experience the same issue. If the mouse is working fine and there are no clicks on its own, the port you used earlier is faulty. If the mouse behaves the same on both ports, try using the mouse on another computer to eliminate the possibility of mouse malfunction.
3] Adjust the settings of the mouse
Disabling the Enhance pointer precision and Inactive scrolling in the Settings app might fix the issue. The inactive scrolling feature in Windows allows you to scroll through a background window without bringing it to the front. The mouse acceleration feature changes the speed of your mouse cursor based on how fast you move your mouse. You need to disable both the features and see if it makes any difference.
To disable mouse acceleration in Windows:
- Open the Settings app.
- Click on Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Mouse.
- Click on Additional mouse settings under Related settings.
- It will open Mouse Properties. Click on the Pointer Options tab.
- Under the Motion section, uncheck the button beside Enhance pointer precision.
- Click on Apply and OK to save the changes.
See if the change made any difference in the mouse behavior and fixed the issue. If not follow the below methods.
To disable Inactive scrolling on Windows:
- Open the Settings app.
- Click on Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Mouse.
- Toggle the button off beside Scroll inactive windows when hovering over them.
Check if it has fixed the issue.
4] Disable the touchscreen
If your Windows 11/10 PC has a touchscreen feature, it is recommended to disable the touchscreen when you find the mouse clicking on its own. This method is useful when the windows are scrolling automatically or something is happening on them that seems like the mouse clicking on its own. You can disable the touchscreen of the laptop in its Device Manager.
To disable the touchscreen in Device Manager:
- Click on the Start button, search Device Manager, and open it from the results.
- Expand the Human Interface Devices tab.
- Right-click on the HID-compliant touchscreen device and select Disable device.
- Click Yes to confirm.
See if it has fixed the issue.
5] Uninstall mouse automation software
You might have installed a mouse automation software and forgot about it. Check the list of programs installed on your PC and uninstall the mouse automation software. Also, uninstall the programs you no longer use from the list of installed programs. If you have seen this issue after installing a certain program, uninstall it completely from your PC and see if it has made any difference.
6] Disable the Touchpad
If you use an external mouse on your laptop and see this issue, disable the Touchpad. It can fix the issue. To disable the Touchpad on Windows 11/10,
- Open the Settings app.
- Click on Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Touchpad
- Toggle the button beside Touchpad to turn it off.
7] Check remote connections
If your PC is being accessed remotely with any remote connection, you see the mouse clicking on its own without your interference. Check if your PC has any remote connection programs running and being accessed remotely. Disable the remote connections by closing the programs that enable remote connections, and disable the Remote Desktop in the Settings app.
To disable Remote Desktop on Windows 11:
- Open the Settings app
- Click on System and select the Remote Desktop option
- Turn off the Remote Desktop toggle switch
- Click on the Confirm button to save the changes
8] Check Click Lock setting
This Click Lock feature will let you highlight, select and drag files, folders, and items, without pressing down the mouse button. Disable it and see.
8] Reinstall Mouse driver
You can uninstall the Mice and other pointing device drivers and install them through Optional updates to fix the issue.
These methods will help you fix the issue.
