Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome have a feature to pin tabs. These pinned tabs remain pinned until you unpin them even if you close your browser. However, for some users, the pinned tabs are getting unpinned in Edge or Chrome when they close the browser. If such a thing happens to you, you can use the solutions explained in this article to resolve this issue.
Pinned tabs getting unpinned in Chrome or Edge
Use the following suggestions if the pinned tabs are getting unpinned in Edge or Chrome (depending on the browser you use):
- Check for updates
- Set Edge and Chrome to currently opened tabs
- Continue running background apps when Edge or Chrome is closed
- Create a new profile in Edge and Chrome
- Did you open a new window in Edge or Chrome?
- Reset Edge and Chrome
- Reinstall Chrome
Below, I have explained all these fixes in detail.
1] Check for updates
The first thing that you should do is check for updates. An outdated version of software may have bugs due to which many issues occur. Check for updates in Edge and Chrome. If an update is available, Edge and Chrome will automatically install that update. After the update is installed, restart the browser.
2] Set Edge and Chrome to currently opened tabs
Set Edge and Chrome to previously opened tabs. By enabling this setting, Edge and Chrome will not start a new session when you launch them. Instead, they will resume the previous session.
Open Edge Settings and select the Start, home, and new tabs option from the left side. Now, select the Open tabs from the previous session option on the right side. This option is available under the When Edge Starts section.
Open Google Chrome settings and select the On startup option from the left side. Now, select the Continue where you left off option on the right side.
3] Continue running background apps when Edge or Chrome is closed
Continue running background apps when Edge or Chrome is closed and see if this fixes the issue. The steps to do this are as follows:
Open Microsoft Edge Settings and select the System and performance category from the left side. Now, enable the Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edhe is closed option.
Open Google Chrome settings and select the System category from the left side. Now, enable the Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.
4] Create a new profile in Edge and Chrome
Your user profile in Edge or Chrome might be corrupted. To check this, create a new profile in Edge or Chrome and pin some tabs in it. See if the issue appears in the new profile.
If the issue does not occur in the new profile, you can continue using that profile. Sign in to that profile and you will get all your bookmarks, extensions, and other browser data in that profile. Now, you can delete the previous profile.
5] Did you open a new window in Edge or Chrome?
Did you open a new window in the browser before closing Edge or Chrome? If yes, this might be the cause of this issue. When you open a new window, it does not have the pinned tabs.
After opening a new window if you close the previously opened window (that has the pinned tabs), start working in the new window, and then close the browser, you will not get the pinned tabs the next time you open the browser. In this case, you can restore the previous window by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + T keys.
6] Reset Edge or Chrome
You can reset Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome to the default. Resetting a browser is helpful if you are facing issues with it or you have messed up with its settings. Reset Edge and Chrome and see if it works. This action will reset your new tab page and other settings.
7] Reinstall Chrome
The last resort is to reinstall Google Chrome. First, remove or uninstall Google Chrome completely from your computer. You can use Revo Uninstaller for this purpose. After that, restart your computer, then download the latest version of Chrome, and then install it.
That’s it. I hope this helps.
Do pinned tabs stay after closing Edge?
Yes, pinned tabs stay after closing Microsoft Edge. However, if you open a new window in Edge, it will not contain the pinned tab. If you close the previously opened window after opening the new window, and then close the browser, you will lose the pinned tabs.
How do I permanently pin a tab in Edge?
To pin a tab in Edge, right-click on the tab and select Pin tab. Edge will pin the selected tab. The pinned tab will remain pinned until you unpin or close that tab even if you close Microsoft Edge.
