According to Microsoft, this problem occurs when a deadlock occurs between the Credential Manager and the Redirector (RDR) and Data Protection API (DPAPI). The following configurations can also trigger this problem on a Windows Server:
- When the Home folder is mapped to the DFS (Distributed File System) path.
- If the “Set a default associations configuration file” Group Policy Object is enabled for the file association sets.
Microsoft released an update to fix this issue. Hence, it is important to update Windows OS. To install the Windows Update, open the Windows Update page in Windows Settings or download the available update packages for your Windows OS version from Microsoft Download Center.

- Open the Windows Services Manager.
- Scroll down and locate the User Profile Service.
- Right-click and select Restart.
3] Create a new user account
If, after installing the Windows Update, the issue continues to persist, its cause lies somewhere else. Your user account may have been corrupted. We suggest you create another user account.
If you have already created another user account, sign in to that account and see if Windows takes too long to sign you in. To create a new user account, you must wait until Windows signs you in.
If the issue does not persist in another user account, the user account you are experiencing the issue with might have been corrupted.
