Fix Proxy Authentication Error 2606 in OneDrive
If you encounter Proxy Authentication Error 2606 in OneDrive, follow the solutions below.
- Disconnect and reconnect your network
- Disconnect from Proxy or VPN
- Reset Network Protocols
- Reset OneDrive
- Disconnect and reconnect your Work or School account
- Repair Microsoft 365 Installation
- Open a ticket with Microsoft
1] Disconnect and reconnect your network
The Proxy Authentication error can result from a network glitch. We should first disconnect from the Internet and then reconnect it to resolve it. Switch to a different network and try logging into OneDrive if you can. If the issue persists, move on to the next solution.
2] Disconnect from Proxy or VPN
A VPN or a Proxy network allows you to connect to different servers. However, when setting up your account, you should avoid connecting to a remote server. If you use a VPN, go ahead and disconnect your network. However, if you are connected to a proxy network, follow the steps mentioned below to confirm and disable it.
- Open Settings by Win + I.
- Navigate to Network & internet > Proxy.
- Check the Use a proxy server, it would be set to On. If that is the case, click on Edit.
- Toggle off the Use a proxy server to disable it and click on Save.
Finally, go ahead and connect to OneDrive.
3] Reset Network Protocols
Next, we will reset the network protocols to negate the possibility of a network glitch. We will reset the connectivity rules and the Winsock protocol related to the network adapter. To do so, open Command Prompt as an administrator by searching for it in the Start Menu. Now, execute the following commands.
netsh int ip reset
netsh int winsock reset
Wait for the process to complete and see if the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, run the following command to flush and renew DNS.
ipconfig /flushdns
Finally, reboot your computer and check if the issue is resolved.
4] Reset OneDrive
Next, we will reset OneDrive to its factory settings. When you reset OneDrive, it disconnects all your sync connections and resets the app to its default settings. This process doesn’t delete your files or data; it forces OneDrive to re-establish connections and perform a full sync.
- Open Run by Win + R.
- Paste
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
- Click OK.
This will trigger the reset command and you will see a pop-up saying OneDrive is resetting after successful completion of the operation, you will see OneDrive reset is completed pop up.
5] Disconnect and reconnect your Work or School Account
There is a possibility that the first time you connected your account to your computer, it failed to update all the policies. So, to resolve it, we need to disconnect from the account and then connect it back. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open Settings.
- Navigate to Accounts > Access work or school account.
- Go to the account you are trying to open OneDrive with and then click the Remove button.
- Once the account is removed, reboot your system, go to the same Settings panel, click on Connect, enter your credentials, and sign in.
Finally, check If the issue is resolved.
6] Repair Microsoft 365 Installation
If Microsoft 365 or Office running on your computer is corrupted, you will encounter errors such as 2606. However, considering the vulnerability of the utility, Microsoft has included an option to repair the installation. To do so, we can follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for “Microsoft 365”, click on the three dots, and click on Modify.
- Now, click on Quick Repair.
After repairing, check if the issue is resolved. If the issue persists, you need to go for Online Repair.
Hopefully, the issue will be resolved.
7] Open a ticket with Microsoft
If all else fails, our last resort is to open a case with Microsoft and ask them for a plausible solution. For that, you will have to contact the IT Admin or Microsoft 365 Admin as they can open a ticket from the Admin Center. To do so, one can follow the steps mentioned below.
- Navigate to admin.cloud.microsoft. Only admins can access this page, if you are not one, you will get a message saying the same.
- From the bottom right corner of the screen, click on Help & Support.
- Now, in the search box, enter your concern, and search to find the answer.
- If you can’t find anything, click on the headphone icon.
- Select how you want to be contacted.
- Now, enter your grievance along with the contact information.
- Then, click on Contact me.
You have raised a ticket with Microsoft. They will contact you to rectify your issue.
