Surface Earbuds: How to set up, use, charge, update & manage settings
The Surface Earbuds combines an ultra-comfortable and secure fit with intuitive gestures like touch, tap, and swipe for effortless control of your music like skip a music track, adjust the volume, answer and end calls, or get assistance without missing a beat.
We’ll explore this topic under separate subsections below as follows.
1] How to set up Surface Earbuds?
To set up the Surface Earbuds, do the following:
Before you begin, put the earbuds in your ears and find the fit that works for you.
Now, head over to Google Play, App Store, Microsoft Store or Microsoft Download Center (if Google Play Store is not available in your region), download and install the Surface Audio app (lets you update your earbuds, personalize settings for them, and more) on your phone or PC.
Next, pair your Surface Earbuds over Bluetooth with your phone or Windows 10 PC.
Pair Surface Earbuds over Bluetooth on Android and/or iOS
To pair Surface Earbuds over Bluetooth on Android and/or iOS, do the following:
- Place your earbuds in the charging case.
- Press and hold the Pair button on the bottom of the case for 5 seconds. When your earbuds are in pairing mode, the LED on the case will continuously flash white.
Note: The Surface Earbuds will go into pairing mode automatically the first time you open your new earbuds charging case.
- Now, on your Android device, select the notification that appears for your Surface Earbuds. If the notification doesn’t appear for you, you can open Bluetooth settings on your Android, and then select Surface Earbuds.
- On your iOS device, open Settings, and then tap Bluetooth.
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, and then tap Surface Earbuds under Other Devices.
Pair Surface Earbuds over Bluetooth on Windows PC
To pair Surface Earbuds over Bluetooth on Windows PC, do the following:
- Repeat the same actions as above.
- Then, on your Windows 10/11 PC, select Connect if a notification appears for your Surface Earbuds. If the notification doesn’t appear for you, you can select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth > Surface Earbuds > Done.
Once you’re done with pairing, you can now proceed to set up your Surface Earbuds in the Surface Audio app.
Set up Surface Earbuds in the Surface Audio app on Android or iOS device
To set up Surface Earbuds in the Surface Audio app on Android or iOS, do the following:
- Open the Surface Audio app.
- In the Surface Audio app, select Connect under Surface Earbuds.
- Take your earbuds out of the charging case to connect.
Set up Surface Earbuds in the Surface Audio app on Windows PC
To set up Surface Earbuds in the Surface Audio app on Windows PC, do the following:
- Select the Start button, then select Surface Audio in the app list.
- In the Surface Audio app, under Devices, select Surface Earbuds.
- Take your earbuds out of the charging case to connect.
- Click OK on the Use Surface Earbuds with Office apps prompt.
- Select Allow to pair over Bluetooth LE.
2] How to use Surface Earbuds?
The image above shows you how to find your way around your Surface Earbuds and the charging case. The labeled parts are:

You can use your Surface Earbuds to listen to music, make calls, and get things done in Microsoft 365. You can also use your digital assistant and voice to go hands-free when you have your earbuds connected to your phone or Windows 10/11 PC, to control music, calls, get answers to questions and more.
3] How to charge Surface Earbuds?
To charge your case and Surface Earbuds, do the following:
- Plug the USB cable that shipped with the earbuds into a USB port on your Windows 10/11 PC.
- Plug the other end into the USB-C port on the back of your charging case. To charge your earbuds too, put them in the case.
The light inside the charging case will fade in and out white while charging and appear solid white when the case is fully charged. You can check the battery level for your Surface Earbuds anytime in the Surface Audio app.
4] How to update Surface Earbuds?
Using the Surface Audio app to update your Surface Earbuds, you can get the best experience from your earbuds with the latest improvements.
Open the Surface Audio app, then select Update earbuds. This button appears when an update is available. The update can take up to 15 minutes to download and install.
Also, to keep your earbuds and charging case working seamlessly, you might need to update the charging case.
5] How to manage Surface Earbuds settings?
Lastly, you can use the Surface Audio app to update and manage your Surface Earbuds settings once you have successfully set up your earbuds.

Open the Surface Audio app, then select Devices > Surface Earbuds.
