Before you go around downloading & installing the next Windows 10 Feature Update, there may be a few things you want to do first. While you don’t have to do this, you may do it just for the sake of doing it and for ensuring that you do get a seamless upgrade experience on your Windows 10 PC.
Checklist – Before downloading the next Windows 10 Feature Update
1] You sure you want to?
First of all, think for a few minutes and make sure that you do want to upgrade your Windows 10 right away. If you have doubts in your mind or if you do not want to face the uncertainty of possible problems and issues after installing the next Windows 10 Feature Update, you can choose to, via Windows Update Settings, to defer the installation of this feature update. When you select this option, the Windows 10 Creators Update will not install for a few months. You may then check out the reports on the web and then decide when you want to install it.
2] Clear up Disk Space
Once you decide to install it, I suggest you ensure that you have sufficient disk space to install the Feature Update. Running the built-in Disk Cleanup Tool or CCleaner might be a good idea. You may also remove old Windows installation files if you still have them installed on your PC. Check your system drive and see if you can move some of the heavier files, like say photographs, to your data drive.
3] Backup Important Data
Next backup your important files and data to an external hard drive or USB. This is just to play safe, should anything go wrong. It is always good to hope for the best, but one must also be prepared for the worst!
4] Upgrade process
Next, select how you want to upgrade. I would suggest your use Windows Update, but there are other ways you can get the Windows 10 Feature Update too.
5] Small things
To be on the safe side, update all your installed software, disable your antivirus software, remove any plugged in USB drives, disconnect any attached peripherals, plug into your Mains power supply, and ensure that your PC is fully charged.
Now finally grab a cup of coffee, restart your computer, and then start your upgrade process and hope that it goes through smoothly.
