Most users of the Windows 11/10 operating system are owners of laptops instead of a full-blown desktop computer, and that’s perfectly fine. These devices are easy to carry around, and not to mention, they do not require a lot of electricity to function. As small as they are, many laptops can do many advanced tasks usually designed for desktops, but at the same time, they still tend to draw less power from the source.
Unfortunately, when it comes down to long-term reliability, laptops are not on the same level as desktops, and that’s understandable because manufacturers have to fit a lot of power into a small frame.
Another important thing we should point out is the fact that laptop computers are sometimes subjected to a series of events that could lead to a system freeze, chokes, and even complete shutdown. This is due to CPU throttling, therefore, if you want to keep track of what’s going on, you’ll need a software that is capable of tracking the three main types of CPU throttling that are present on your computer.
Monitor & disable CPU throttling using ThrottleStop
To do this, we’re going to use a tool known as ThrottleStop to see if it’s worth your time. We’ve heard good things about this piece of software, so now it’s time to put it to the test.
OK, so downloading ThrottleStop is very simple due to its small size. Not to mention, it’s a portable tool, which means, there’s no need to install. Just extract it from the ZIP file and launch away.
Undervolt CPU using Throttlestop on Windows PC
The first thing you’ll see is a user interface that is easy on the eyes. The colors here are read, black, white, and a little touch of grey. It looks great from our point of view, and while simple, it shows a lot of information that you might be interested in.
Now, under the logo that says TechPowerUp, you’ll see the word Performance along with four dots. Clicking on any one dot will change how your laptop operates, so keep that in mind.
As you can see, the default is Performance, but if you are planning to play video games, you can simply select the one that says Games, or if the idea is to primarily use the web for the day, select the option that says Internet.
There are other options below as you can tell from the image. If your CPU supports Turbo, then you can disable this with just a click of a button. Furthermore, folks can view the temperature of their CPU among other important things.
Bear in mind that each time you make a change, you’ll be required to click on Save at the bottom to get your new settings into action.
ThrottleStop Options
Right beside the Save button, you’ll see Options and this where you’ll be able to make several changes to the tool and determine how it works best for you. If you want, you can change the profile names. For example, if you want to change the word Performance to Stupid Fast, then that’s entirely possible.
The ability is also there to change the colors of the Notification Area Icons. You can download it from here.
TIP: Counter Control helps you monitor performance counters on Intel processors.
