In this tutorial, we will show you how to turn on basic camera mode in Windows 11 to limit camera features to the basics. This new setting is under the Advanced camera options page and can be helpful if your webcam or a connected camera is not functioning correctly. After enabling this setting, you will also be able to choose the Media type (Preferred camera resolution) for an optimal experience.
In the image above, you can see that the basic camera mode is enabled. Currently, this feature is available in insider builds of Windows 11. It will soon be available in the stable build.
How to turn on Basic Camera mode in Windows 11 to limit camera features
Here are the steps to turn on basic camera mode on a Windows 11 PC:
- Open the Windows 11 Settings app using Win+I hotkey
- Click on the Bluetooth & devices category on the left section
- Select the Cameras page from the right section
- Select a webcam or camera (say HP TrueVision HD) in the Connected cameras section for which you want to enable the basic camera functionality
- Press the Edit button for Advanced camera options
- Now, press the button available for the Turn on basic camera setting in the advanced camera configurations page to enable the setting. This action will also turn on the Allow multiple apps to use camera at the same time setting and the same setting will be greyed out
- Additionally, you can also select the Media type or keep the default setting
- Click on the Apply button and the basic camera mode for the selected camera will enable.
You can repeat these steps to enable basic camera mode for other connected cameras.

How do I change my default camera settings in Windows 11?
To modify or change default settings for a camera on your Windows 11 PC, access the Cameras page in the Settings app. Select a connected camera and expand the Basic settings section to adjust the Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation, and Brightness. Based on the Windows version and camera capabilities, you can use other controls like rotating camera, Video HDR, etc. If you want to adjust more settings, use the manufacturer’s app which includes different configurations.
How to activate camera in Windows 11?
If a camera/webcam is disabled in your Windows 11 system, you can activate or enable a camera or webcam using the Settings app. Navigate to Bluetooth & devices > Cameras. You will see a Disabled cameras section. In the list of disabled cameras, press the Enable button for a camera to enable and use it.
