When trying to run AutoCAD on a Windows computer, we encountered an error that implied that Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime was absent. Even though the error message suggests that this issue is due to a missing component, which can be true, there are other reasons for this error as well that we are going to talk about in this post. So, if you are unable to run AutoCAD as a dependent component of Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is missing, follow the solutions mentioned in this post.
Unable to run AutoCAD. A dependent component Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is missing or you don’t have sufficient rights to run AutoCAD. If you have sufficient rights, install the missing component or reinstall AutoCAD.
Fix Unable to run AutoCAD
If you are unable to run AutoCAD because of a missing component, follow the solutions mentioned below.
- Start AutoCAD with admin privileges
- Reinstall Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime
- Reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework
- Update AutoCAD
- Uninstall AutoCAD and its latest version
Let us talk about them in detail.
1] Start AutoCAD with admin privileges
If you read the error message, you will see that one reason you are unable to open the application is a lack of rights. The rights they are talking about are admin privileges, which makes sense, as AutoCAD might want to access some admin-protected files and folders. To start AutoCAD with admin rights, right-click on its icon and select Run as administrator. You will get a UAC prompt; just click Yes and continue.
2] Reinstall Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime
Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is a tool that helps developers add web content – like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript – to their desktop applications. It uses the Microsoft Edge (Chromium) engine, which allows native apps to show modern web features. With this runtime, applications can display web-based features smoothly, even if users don’t have Microsoft Edge installed. Since AutoCAD uses Microsoft Edge WebView2 to render its content, its absence can stop the application from launching on your computer.
To uninstall Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, you can follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open the Control Panel by searching for it in the Start Menu.
- Then change the View by to Large icons.
- Go to Programs & features, search for “Microsoft Edge WebView2”, and then uninstall it.
Alternatively, you can open the Command Prompt as an admin and then run the following command.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeWebView\Application\105.0.1343.53\Installer\setup.exe" --uninstall --msedgewebview --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall
If you can’t find the application to uninstall, you can directly download it.
Once done, you need to go to developer.microsoft.com and then download the Microsoft Edge WebView2.
3] Reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework
At times, even after installing Microsoft Edge WebView2, users encountered the same error, as Microsoft .NET Framework was absent. Since AutoCAD uses .NET, the framework is required to run the application as it creates an environment for the program to run. AutoCAD often throws the following error message.
Unable to run AutoCAD. A dependent component Microsoft .NET is missing or you don’t have sufficient rights to run AutoCAD. If you have sufficient rights, install the missing component or reinstall AutoCAD.
To reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework, you need to follow the steps mentioned below.
- Open the Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Click on Turn Windows features on or off on the left side.
- Deselect .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Series and click OK.
- Now, restart your computer and repeat the above three steps.
- Select the .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Series and click OK.
Finally, run the AutoCAD and see if it works.
4] Update AutoCAD
If you are running an older version of AutoCAD, chances are it is not compatible with the installed version of Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime as it is updated. Due to this, AutoCAD is unable to access the tool and is failing. Therefore, we recommend that you update it. You can review product updates automatically, which are available in the Autodesk desktop app. If there is an update available, go ahead and install it.
