Windows 11/10 brought us the concept of Modern UI Apps, so we can use the webcam on our system using the Camera app – thus, we don’t need to install additional software. The app saves pictures in the Camera Roll folder under the Pictures library. But in some scenarios, we have encountered issues when the app cannot detect the Camera Roll folder or save the snapped pictures in these folders. Here is the error one may receive in this situation:
We can’t get to the camera roll right now. Something went wrong while accessing the camera roll.
As you can see in the image above, there is no help or support link here to tell us how to solve this problem. This is the most awkward thing about Modern Apps that they do not provide support links with the error they throw. Try these steps to solve this problem.
We can’t get to the camera roll right now Camera app error
1. Press Windows Key + R combination, type regedit in Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
2. Navigate here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folder
3. In the right pane of this location, right-click in the blank space and select New -> Expandable String Value.
Name this new string as {AB5FB87B-7CE2-4F83-915D-550846C9537B}. Now double-click on this string to modify its Value data:
4. In the Edit String box, put the Value data as %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Camera Roll.
After this, close the Registry Editor and reboot the machine to make the changes effective. The problem should be fixed after restarting the system.
I trust this helps!
Thank you so much. It helped! :)
^^ Glad we could help, thanks for feedback :)
It worked! However, just to note, if you already have a string that has that name for your camera roll, you will need to delete it before you rename your new string. I was hesitant to do that because I couldn’t find any information on it, but it worked!
Oh my goodness! It worked! Thank you SO much! I’ve not been able to use my webcam as a photo app for months and now it works! You are a goddamn GEM!
i don’t have a camera roll in there? what should i do?
Thank you so much.. it worked :)

I have the same problem as you guys.
I followed all these steps and unfortunately it didn’t help :(
I can’t save pictures because of this error….
So I did everything as you describe, I rebooted the computer and still the same error.
I was thinking that maybe it is because in registry editor I have still name : “default” with type : REG_SZ and Data : ( value not set ) . I wanted to delete it before setting new string however this appeared : “Unable to delete all specified values ”
Please help ! I bought 5 days ago Microsoft Surface and I can’t save my pictures ! I might add that I know why the problem occurred . Yesterday I accidentally deleted “camera roll” folder and after that I restored this from recycle bin but I guess something went wrong…
I am waiting for any advices
Thank you so much, Kapil!
By navigating to the location and viewing its contents I found my problem: Somehow my camera roll had been changed to the D drive. Simply changing it from D to C solved it quickly and easily. Thanks!
He says *this foto wasn’t saved*
What I can do?
Worked just fine. Thanks for sharing.
Hurrah it worked. I already had the {AB5… string so tried to just modify the value. It didn’t work. But deleting the string as LIndsay suggested and following Kapil’s steps worked. Thank goodness.
^^ Glad we could help :D
Thank you so much! This really helped! And it was so easy too! The visuals and explanations are great :)
I’m a new Win 8 user and this certainly helped after moving all my photos to an external HDD and finding out that the camera app would not work afterwards. I think its because I moved the folder out of the PC and on to my HDD. Great instructions, worked great! Thanks!
YEYY!!!! IT WORKED!!! Thank you so much!!! I did have to errase the other string like Lindsay said.. I’m so happy
^^ Cool!
Your a STAR
^^ :)
Thanks for the fix!!!
good call, I just did that and now it works!
Dude, you are a huge lifesaver! Thanks
Help! I tried editing the registry as recommended and ensuring that there were no other competing strings for the Camera Roll, but my Windows 7 Explorer still can’t see the camera roll when I have the phone plugged into the computer. The pictures are clearly there because I can see them on the phone.
This worked great for me. What I want to know is how the path to the camera roll could have been changed in the registry in the first place. In my case it was pointing to E:Camera Roll. I don’t even have an E drive. What might have caused this?
^^ Glad we could help! :) Seems like some third-party software modified it.
Thank You so much…It help me alott :)
^^ Glad it helped! :)

Thank you so VERYmuch. I am in school for Nursing and doing a lot on line. Some how I changed my regular camera info to the data value on the PC so when I would use my PC camera it wasn’t working. I have searched thru my phone for a week to try to fix this error with no help. I found your site this morning and was the only NONPC tech way and it worked within 2 minutes. Thank you so very much.
thankyou so much. It worked! :D
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a WHOLE YEAR, I couldn’t get the camera roll to work on my new Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet. I spend days with Dell and some idiots they have working on their hotline …. I got soooo frustrated that I gave up. Yesterday, I was again asked to take a picture of something in class :( This morning, I went online looking for help again, and I found your post. It worked. I can take pictures now. THANK YOU SO MUCH WITH ALL MY HEART! Today is my birthday, and you certainly made me a HUGE present! THANK YOU!!! <3 <3 <3
Many happy returns of the day :)
thx soooo much problem fixed
I have this same problem on my Surface 3 tablet. I think it occurred when I installed OneNote which caused the camera roll folder to be moved to the OneDrive folder. I checked the registry and found that the camera roll location had not been updated. I did the following: 1) made a copy of the camera roll folder and pasted it back to its original location (consistent with the registry)–NO HELP; 2) edited the registry to include “OneDrive” in the filepath–NO HELP. I attempted the fix recommended here, i.e. replacing the “camera roll” entry in the registry with a new correct entry, but I found I could not enter any information in the value name field; the word “{default}” is untouchable, can’t be deleted or replaced, so I could not create a new key. Then I tried deleting the old key first, but I still could not write in the name field, so I am still stuck without camera.
Very helpful. But the value data should be the Camera Roll location in your PC. Mine is C:Usersshawntel095PicturesCamera Roll. But basically, it worked. Thank you :)
it not worked for me
Windows Key + R won’t do anything. Help?
