Windows Mixed Reality headset shows Black Screen
If you’re faced with this issue on your Windows 11 or Windows 10, you can try our recommended solutions below in no particular order and see if that helps to resolve the issue.
- Uninstall update
- Update graphics adapter drivers
- Use USB 3.0
- Turn off G-Sync/V-Sync
- Perform System Restore
- Reset Windows
Let’s take a look at the description of the process involved concerning each of the listed solutions.
Before you try the solutions below, while your WMR headset is plugged in, check for updates and install any available bits on your Windows device and see if the black screen issue is resolved.
1] Uninstall update
If you started experiencing the issue on your Windows device after a recent update, you can uninstall the update and see if the issue is resolved. If not, try the next solution.
2] Update graphics adapter drivers
This solution requires you to update your video/graphics card driver – you can do so either by updating the graphics adapter drivers manually via the Device Manager, or you can get the driver updates on the Optional Updates section under Windows Update. You may also download the latest version of the driver from the video card hardware manufacturer’s website.
3] Use USB 3.0
You may encounter the issue at hand if you plug into the USB 2.0 port. In this case, you can use the USB 3.0 headset cable instead or plug in the headset into a USB 3.0 port on your Windows PC – Windows will now detect it as the new device and the WMR Portal should start to work.
4] Turn off G-Sync/V-Sync
This solution requires you to disable G-Sync or V-Sync, whichever that’s running on your graphics card. If the issue persists, proceed with the next solution.
5] Perform System Restore
If up until now, your Windows Mixed Reality headset was working correctly on your PC, it’s entirely possible that the issue was facilitated by a change that your system has gone through recently that you’re unaware of. In this case, you can restore your system to an earlier point prior to when the issue started.
To perform System Restore on Windows 11/10 computer, do the following:
- Press Windows key + R.
- In the Run dialog box, type rstrui and hit Enter to open up the System Restore Wizard.
- On the System Restore screen, click Next to advance to the next window.
- At the next screen, start by checking the box associated with Show more restore points.
- Next, select a point that has an older date than the one in which you first started to notice the error.
- Click Next to advance to the next menu.
- Click Finish and confirm at the final prompt.
At the next system startup, your older computer state will be enforced.
If the issue is still unresolved, try the next solution.
6] Reset Windows 11/10
If nothing has fixed the issue for you, you can reset Windows – and if that didn’t help you should consider clean installing Windows to resolve the issue.
Any of these solutions should work for you!
How do I fix a black screen with Oculus?

And, if the firmware is corrupt, or the hardware itself is damaged, that can also cause a similar black screen problem. Amongst other Oculus issues, you can easily fix the black screen.
How do I reset Windows Mixed Reality?
The Windows Mixed Reality does not include a single button you can press and hold down to reset your headset.
