- Update Graphics driver
- Repair and reset the Xbox Game bar
- Re-register the Xbox Game bar
- Remove the Microsoft Store cache
- Reinstall the Xbox Game bar
Let’s get started with the troubleshooting guide.
1] Free up disk space
When there is not enough disk space, the Xbox Game Bar may fail to store video recordings or capture screens, leading to errors. To free up space, we will be moving file to an external drive, and here’s how to do it.
- Click Win + E to open File Explorer, and navigate to where the capture folders are located, it usually is, Video > Captures.
- Right-click on the folder, select Cut, then navigate to a drive with more space, and paste it there.
- To get more space, delete unnecessary files, and restart the game bar.
Try recording the game and seeing if the issue is resolved. If it continues, check the next solution.
2] Update Graphics driver
If you are running an outdated or corrupted Graphics driver, then this can cause compatibility issues with the Game Bar features. It is necessary to ensure that the graphics hardware is optimized for video recording and screen capture. Follow the steps mentioned below to update the Graphics driver.
- Click Win + I to open Settings, and Select Windows Update.
- Click on Advanced options and select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates to see if any updates related to the Graphics driver are available.
If updating the drivers didn’t help, we recommend reinstalling the Graphics driver. To do the same, go to the search bar, search, and open Device Manager. Now, expand Display adapters, right-click on the graphics card, and select Uninstall Device. Once done, reboot the PC to automatically download the driver, and check if the issue is resolved. See the next solution if the issue persists.
3] Repair and reset the Xbox Game bar
In this solution, we will repair the Xbox Game Bar to restore the app’s core files without affecting any personal data. If preparing the Xbox Game Bar doesn’t work, resetting it will be the next step.
- Click Win + I to open Settings, navigate to Apps, and click on Installed Apps > System Components.
- Search the Xbox Game bar, click the three dots option, and select Advanced options.
- Scroll down to find and select the Repair option. Wait for the process to complete, then check if the recording works.
If the issue continues, follow the first and second steps, and then click the Reset option.
4] Re-register the Xbox Game bar
If the issue is caused by corrupted files, broken configurations, or incomplete configurations, then re-registering the Xbox Game bar can help resolve it. This resets the app to its default state while ensuring all necessary dependencies are correctly registered.
- Press Win + X and select Terminal (Admin).
- To re-register the Xbox game bar, execute the commands mentioned below:
Get-AppxPackage -allusers *Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage -allusers *Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay* | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
- Launch the Game bar, and see if the issue is resolved.
Hopefully, this will resolve the issue, and if not, move to the next solution.
5] Clear the Microsoft Store cache
Temporary data and corrupted files associated with the Store can be the root cause of the issue. By repairing the app, we can ensure that the app functions properly without glitches or conflicts. To do this, click Win + R to open the Run Dialog box, type WSReset.exe and hit the Ok button. This will reset the Microsoft Store cache, so wait for some time, and once done, see if the recording is now working. If it is still not working, see the next troubleshooting step.

6] Troubleshoot in Clean boot
Background apps or services might also conflict with the Game Bar’s functionality. To determine this, we recommend performing a clean boot to determine if a non-essential application or service is the root cause of the issue.
- Go to the Search bar, type MSConfig in the start search, and open the first option to open the System Configuration Utility. Go to the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
- Clear the Load Startup Items checkbox, and ensure that Load System Services and Use Original boot configuration are checked.
- In the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft Services box, and hit the Disable All button.
- Now, navigate to the Startup tab, click on the Open Task Manager link, disable all the startup options that normally load up on boot up, and exit the Task Manager.
- Click the Apply and Ok button to apply the preferences, and restart the PC.
Now run the Xbox Game Bar, see if you can use the recording option, and if it is working properly, enable the process manually one by one to find the culprit.
Hopefully, you will be able to resolve the issue using the solutions mentioned in this post.
